) Aciphex Can Make Your Heartburn WORSE
Although healthy people can sometimes get heartburn also, chronic heartburn (every two or three days) may suggest acid reflux, also known as GERD - gastro esophageal reflux disease. About 20% of adults in developed western countries must endure recurring heartburn. The name heartburn simply describes the burning sensation of pain in the throat or the chest, often brought on after a meal. The acid reflux at the root of the pain of heartburn is triggered by the weakness of the esophageal sphincter. It can lead to inflammation of the inner esophagus (esophagitis) and difficulties in swallowing, bleeding, esophageal passage constriction, Barrett's esophagus, and sometimes cancer. GERD is the medical condition generated by the incorrect functioning of a muscle between the esophagus and the stomach. More>>

) Feeling the burn
Indeed, the uptick of diagnoses in kids and babies is “really scary," says Seattle physician Tom Vaughan, an expert on acid reflux and professor at the University of Washington. Two decades ago, it was almost unheard of. Now the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), the strongest acid-blocking drugs, for infants like Cooper—who might once have been dismissed as “colicky"—has soared by 750 per cent in the U.S. in the past decade; a range of reflux drugs have been approved for use in kids under age 11. This year, a lime-flavoured, “kid's-strength" version of the GERD prescription drug Nexium will hit the market. “More and more kids are being treated with PPIs and getting anti-reflux surgery," says Dr. Douglas Corley of Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Oakland, Calif. “And no one has any idea what the long-term effects are." Unfortunately, ignoring the symptoms—which for kids can include coughing and tummy aches—has its perils too, notes Gail Attara, executive director of the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research. ) For women, heart disease signs can be misleading - and deadly
As Morrow remembers it, the paramedics said her symptoms were likely due to acid reflux or early menopause. They said they'd take her to the hospital if she wanted, Morrow said, but suggested she relax and call her doctor in the morning. That evening, she went to look at Christmas lights. As she walked around she could feel pressure in her chest. Walking into her home that night, "it hit again."
The family called 911 and the paramedics returned.
This time, Morrow's husband insisted they take her to the hospital.
She was admitted and hooked up to a heart monitor. A nurse woke her up about 6 a.m. the next day and told her she was in the middle of a massive heart attack.
Doctors discovered she had three clogged arteries, and one of them was 100 percent blocked. More>>
