  • ( ) The Cider Vinegar Heartburn Cure?

The "Eat, Drink and Be Healthy" nutrition column in today's Health section explores ways to manage heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD through altering your diet. Losing weight and identifying those foods that seem to trigger your heartburn (and then avoiding those foods) are the prime tips offered by dietitian Elaine Magee, author of Tell Me What to Eat if I Have Acid Reflux.

One remedy that doesn't appear in Magee's book is the apple cider vinegar cure, which has been circulating in home- and folk-medicine circles for decades and more recently has found a presence on the Internet. My friend Elizabeth, who, like me, has GERD but who, unlike me, prefers to manage it without taking a lot of medicine, got wind of this apple cider thing via a syndicated newspaper column written by Dr. More>>

There is a possible link with the acid reflux that may occur when lying flat at night and usually causes heartburn but may, for some obscure reason, also precipitate disturbances of heart rhythm. Theoretically, then, these nocturnal attacks might be prevented by taking an acid suppressant drug before retiring.

As reported in the Telegraph on Saturday, the Health Secretary Alan Johnson is preparing to announce next month that so-called top-up payments will be allowed in future. This reverses his previous opposition to NHS patients paying for private drugs, which had led to some being penalised after purchasing medicines that were not available on the health service.

Problem solved? There is, however, rather more to this issue. The drug companies will have no incentive, if this becomes widespread, to reduce the scandalously inflated price of drugs – knowing that patients are willing to pay vast sums for the hope of even a modest improvement in their prospects. Barrett's Oesophagus is an abnormal lining of the gullet, which occurs in patients with a long history of heartburn and acid reflux. This can progress to cancer which has a low survival rate. If detected early, a cure is possible. Claire was joined by a team of supporters for her personal journey on two wheels. Most completed 63 but some, including Claire, decided to spend a further 12 miles in their saddles. What do you think? Click here to send a letter or leave a comment below. • ( ) Project under fire -from within

At least councillors representing these acid-reflux-plagued ratepayers could have soothed their consciences with the fact Chatham land profits were to fund the $2.75- million interest-free loan.

Not anymore. No sale. No finalization of negotiations on an option to purchase. No interest in these gloomy economic times.

    Nada.

This latest bullet to the foot added more brass to a pile of empty shell casings that started tumbling out shortly after it appeared the theatre would finally be completed. It was only this past March when the municipality took over the theatre property and helped secure the $7 million from the provincial Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative. The Chatham Capitol Theatre Association had enough funds to finish the job, right?

  • ( ) Incisionless surgery for heartburn goes for the throat

"The quality of life issues related to reflux really can be severe. In fact, GERD can lead to the development of a need for a lung transplant, and we see that all the time. They're [breathing in stomach acids] and they're scarring and then the lungs don't work ... [and] reflux disease is a big risk factor, the main risk factor, for esophageal cancer, which is a lethal disease."

Most reflux patients, however, don't develop that cancer. Only about 1 percent or fewer appear to get esophageal cancer.

Dr. Jobe diagnosed Mrs. Crawford's complication as probable adult-onset asthma. More important, he also provided what is, if its short track record holds up, a cure for both the heartburn and the asthma.

It's a brand-new incisionless surgery he helped to pioneer in the United States called transoral incisionless endoscopic fundoplication, or EsophX. More>>
